Review submitted 31st December 2010 - by Scott from Sydney Australia

I was a bit disappointed with the food at Akashi Japanese Restaurant. It seems all the staff, including the sushi chefs are Chinese which may explain the food not being the best Japanese. I ordered the Tonkatsu set meal which I had read a good recommendation for on the internet. First it came with a side dish which I thought was deep fried chicken. When I bit into it it was in fact a fish head with lots of cartilage. Once I found the tiny morsel of fish meat that was tasty though too fiddly to eat with all the cartilage. The Tonkatsu pork was a bit disappointing and delightful. The first piece I had was very tough, The second piece fatty and chewy, The next few pieces were perfect, tender, juicy and very tasty, then the last few pieces were back to tough and fatty. I ordered a different side dish of minced chicken on a skewer. This also was disappointing, lots of chewy bits which I think was grisly or bone, but I was unable to eat this. There must be plenty of other great Japanese Restaurants in Singapore. This one worth avoiding.
